Prior to attaining a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Otago university he supported his father in his rural trucking business and Laurie still holds those practical skills today. He also travelled, surfing some of the biggest most powerful waves in the world and playing rugby.
These days outside of work he enjoys to surf and snow ski with his wife and sons and enjoying the Hauraki Gulf in their boat. He swims, bikes, and runs to keep a base level of fitness.
