KiwiRail is upgrading the rail network, rebuilding aging rail foundations, some up to 150 years old, and fixing drainage issues. The work will be done in stages over three years. The aim is for faster journey times, with more frequent trains.

From Jan 16th until March 19th 2023, the Onehunga Line will be closed. Trains will not run on the Southern Line between Ōtāhuhu & Britomart. Six stations will be closed: Onehunga, Te Papapa, Penrose, Ellerslie, Greenlane and Remuera. For details on what rail lines will be running and for the rail replacement buses schedule, click on this brochure from Auckland Transport. You can also find information specific to Penrose and Onehunga on A.T’s website: AT.govt.nz/RailRebuild.

Also attached is KiwiRail’s Auckland Metro Programme December Newsletter, which includes information about their usual Christmas/New Year network-wide closure and information about Stage 1 of the Rail Network Rebuild.
